Always accustomed to doing things his own way, Cale handled nearly all the instrumentation on his last album Guitar Manrecording in his home studio, but for This Guys In Love With You - Fausto Papetti - The Sexy Sax Of Fausto Papetti Vol.

2 Tulsa and Back he opted to change his approach by regrouping with long-time producer Audie Ashworth, as he recalled to Dan Forte:. But then he passed away, and I put the deal on hold. Eventually, I decided to do the same program, only go to Tulsa instead of Nashville.

I cut some there, and had some demos I did here at the house, and I sent them all to Bas [Hartong] and to Mike [Test]. The keyboards, drum loops, and horns on this record are as pervasive as the guitars…It's just that the sheeny beats and clean synth lines feel odd when juxtaposed against the murky lyrics and Cale's wispy, smoke-weathered voice.

Cale - To Tulsa And Back it go down smoother. The problem with this album is not Cale's politics, because not only does he have the great "Homeless" but also a devastating ecology tune called "Stone River" and another song called "The Problem", where he breaks it all down for us all Riddler-style: "Have you heard the news that's going round you? Cale - To Tulsa And Back isn't piano-driven Britpop or that Timbaland didn't produce it or that it's not in Icelandic with sampled vacuumcleaner noises or that it's not grime straight from the garage or that there's no famous backup singers or that it's not screamed by year-olds yet to earn their tattoos.

The problem isn't that it's not fashionable to make J. Cale albums in the yearbecause that in itself is so outlandishly unfashionable that it's incredibly hip. The wheel comes around, kids, Cale is one of the good guys, doesn't matter if you've never heard of him, he's spitting mad fire here.
